Silver Springs Training encompasses approximately 400 acres of Lexington’s influential bluegrass.
Divided into 2 farms, both of which are located on the esteemed Paris Pike, both properties neighbor other notorious farms such as Walmac Farm, Gainesway Farm and Spendthrift. The Training Division Located on Swigert Ave, holds the history of multiple owners all sharing similar levels of success, the common denominator, the immaculately designed 3/4 qtr Mile dirt track. Originally owned by Millard Waldheim, Bwamazon was founded in the 1970s and was later bought by Elmer Whitaker after Waldheim died in 1983. When the training track, that still remains today, was built, designers ensured they used the same material used for the main track surfaces at both Churchill Downs and Keeneland at the time. Under Waldheim's ownership, Bwamazon became the second owner to earn a gold pitcher through Keeneland's Milestone Trophy program. A gold pitcher is awarded for having 16 graded stakes winners at the track. Bwamazon made its presence felt at Churchill Downs, as well, earning a place as the eighth-leading owner with 63 total winners among owners who raced at Keeneland and Churchill Downs during 1980-88.
Bwamazon's 2 -year-olds were notoriously hard to beat.
Between 1980 and 1985, Bwamazon was the leading owner by number of 2-year-old winners for four years at Keeneland and still ranks among the top 10 owners by total juvenile winners at Keeneland during 1980-2019 with 22.
Bwamazon's top homebreds during this time included 1980 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G3)winner Television Studio and Highland Park, who won the Kentucky Jockey Club, Iroquois Stakes, and Breeders' Futurity (G2) in 1982.
These deep roots in success have carried on their tradition of producing winners for Silver Springs graduates also. Including GOODNIGHT OLIVE winner of not one, but two consecutive Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Sprints (G1), and KINGSBARNS winner of the TwinSpires Louisiana Derby (G2) and competitor in the 2023 Kentucky Derby just to mention a few.
Silver Springs Training also offers a Juvenile Division where mares and young horses develop the strength and soundness required of a champion.
Our Juvenile Division is located 5 minutes up the road, also on Paris Pike; which was originally a section of Payson Stud Farm. Founded in the 1980's, Payson forever remained a small boutique with no more than 12 quality mares. Payson Stud produced 78 stakes horses, of which 30 won or placed in graded stakes and three were champions. The Payson family considered St Jovite their crowning achievement as a breeding operation. The son of Pleasant Colony, winner of the 1981 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, St Jovite was 1992 European Horse of the Year and named champion in England, Ireland and France. Payson's own mare, Northern Sunset, was honored as 1995 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year. In 1997, Virginia Payson was honored as Breeder of the Year by the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association.
Many factors are taken into account when considering the wealth of the land in which we raise our horses. One of the most important criteria to us is in the water which our horses are raised on. At our juvenile division we are fortunate to have access to an aquaphor that we drilled over 200 ft to reach. It is our opinion that the calcium, sulfur, and lime- along with many other minerals within, is one of the keys to producing such success.
Silver Springs has continued the tradition of breeding winners, just as the Payson family did. A notable homebred being CASA CREED- who has proven both his strength and soundness, running into his 7th year and winning 3 Grade 1 races, earning over 2.6 Million Dollars.
